Dr. Esther N. Kimani is a senior research scientist at KALRO Biotechnology Research Institute – Kabete Center with over a decade of experience in crop biotechnology research. Her work focuses on using molecular biology techniques to diagnosis diseases, in selection of breeding material, studying of the molecular diversity of crop and microorganisms and in improvement of crop varieties. She participated in the introgression of provitamin A, iron and zinc bioavailability and protein digestibility into farmer preferred sorghum varieties in Kenya as part of the African Biofortified Sorghum project. She was also involved in confirmation of the introgression using PMI lateral flow strips and PCR. Esther holds a Ph.D in crop protection from the University of Nairobi, and has collaborated with national and international research institutions on projects to address crop production issues. She is currently the Deputy center director of KALRO-Biotechnology Research Center- Kabete.
